Medacta International – RFID PJM in Orthopedic Logistics

01.

Background

Medacta International is a Swiss company and leader in the production of orthopedic implants, used a barcode-based system in its warehouses that proved to be slow, cumbersome, and inefficient.

02.

Goal

Modernize the tracking of orthopedic implants throughout the entire logistics chain, improving operational efficiency, inventory accuracy, and process automation.

03.

Solution with SAIT’s support

In collaboration with SATO Europe GmbH (Italy), SAIT led the implementation of RFID PJM (Phase Jitter Modulation) technology compliant with ISO/IEC 18000-3 Mode 2 standard.

The project introduced radiation-hardened RFID tags, capable of withstanding gamma irradiation sterilization. This made it possible to enable direct factory identification and lifetime traceability of the implant. In addition, D-Series labels with NFC functionality were adopted, paving the way for future quick scans from mobile devices without the need for dedicated hardware.

SAIT’s added value was its on-site operational and consulting support, which ensured the smooth integration of RFID technology into Medacta’s existing logistics processes. This tailored approach facilitated solution adoption, contributing to the project’s success and customer satisfaction.

04.

Results

+30% operational efficiency at Medacta’s headquarters, resulting in reduced personnel costs.

100% inventory accuracy.

In international markets (United States, Japan, various European countries including Italy), efficiency improvements ranging from 5% to 15%.
